CATHY

I got my first tattoo at the 1996 Richmond Tattoo Arts Festival. It's a hummingbird on my calf. The design and needle work were done by Shahn Anderson, owner of Electric Dragonland Tattoo in Hopkins, Minnesota. That's Shahn below working on my hummingbird.

This is my hummingbird. I really like the detail that Shahn put into it, and I love the colors. It's funny, but I never thought I'd get a tattoo. My husband had them...and that was okay...but me? Nope...but then, I saw some of the great stuff Shahn was doing. I was hooked.

My next tattoo was also done by Shahn Anderson...at the 1997 Richmond Tattoo Arts Festival. I wanted to continue working with Shahn, and I also wanted to continue the hummingbird theme. Here's a picture of Shahn putting the design on my arm with a pen before starting with the needle.

The original design for this tattoo was done by Bert, who you can see elsewhere on this home page. Here's a picture of Shahn, me, and my latest tattoo just after Shahn finished it.

Here is a close-up of my new tattoo.

My daughter Bridget and my husband love my tattoos. My mother hates them. She won't even look at them.

I got another hummingbird added to my arm by Bald Bill at the 1998 Richmond Convention. Here's Bald Bill working on my arm, and Bill and me with the finished project.

Here's a close up of the final product...check out the new hummingbird that Bald Bill added. Bill owns Yankee Tattoo Studio in Burlington, Vermont.

By the time the 1999 Richmond Convention rolled around, I was ready for more ink. I knew I wanted something fairly small, possibly on my breast. I discussed my idea with John Joyes of State of the Art Tattooing in Winchester, Virginia. You can see John sketching out his ideas below.

Ah...I remember the feel of the needle...it never takes a fraction of a second for that to return...

A close-up of the needle doing its work...

Here's the finished piece.

Thanks, John!

John also did a red-breasted woodpecker on my upper thigh....

Shahn Anderson added some depth to my hummingbird at the 2002 Richmond Tattoo Convention.

Bald Bill does some touch-up work.

Now I've moved to my left arm. The sleeve is a large white heron in a tropical setting. Ron Shearer of Exposed Temptations Tattoo Studio in Manassas, VA designed it and is doing the inkwork. Here's the outline work I did in the first sitting...

And here's my tat after one sitting to do the color work.
